When playing netball, environmental considerations are very important and ensuring that players monitor them can prevent health problems and a lack in performance.
temperature regulation
In order to maintain a healthy body core temperature (37 degrees celsius) the hypothalamus initiates a series of physiological reactions, these include the constriction of blood vessels, or causing the muscles to shiver. Your body also uses convection, conduction, radiation and evaporation to regulate body temperature. E.g. A netball players body will begin to sweat to reduce heat
Climactic conditions
Conditions such as severe temperatures, high humidity, forceful wind, heavy rain, altitude and pollution can all affect the performance of athletes. E.g. Push bike riding into the force of the wind will considerably slow an athlete and cause the level of effort they are using to increase. For netball specifically, if the temperature reaches over 40 degrees Celsius then the game is called off due to the physical toll taken on the players.
fluid intake
To prevent dehydration and a decrease in performance, netball players must always stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. As a general rule, an athlete will lose 1 litre of water for every kilogram of weight they lose during a physical activity. Drinking fluids such as Gatorade and Powerade will help replace some of the lost electrolytes during exercise. Having water bottles ready in-between quarters is a great way to keep netball players hydrated.
